What's on your phone?
Hello fellow smartphoners!
In this space I'll be including what apps are on my iPhone. I'll include a quick note about the app and whether I can or can't live without it. Hopefully we can find a few gems. As always, I love to talk tech. So send me your notes on your favorites or if you're using one of my apps, tell me what you think. I'm always curious about the 'other side', so if you're a Droid user send me your favorites and feel free to include the trash talk.
This week: Social apps
Loopt
This is a location based app that allows you to 'check in' from a location. You can ping other Loopt users (I've found a few in IT) or just post to Facebook or Twitter. I've used it a few times, but with Facebook now supporting places I wonder how useful it is. I doubt if people are really interested where I am and what I'm doing. Not really a frequent app for me.
Facebook
Ok, I'm a lurker. Very infrequently, I'll post something. Usually it's a pic of the kids. Then everyone says 'Awww, how cute'. I do check up on friends and relatives though and it makes me feel a bit closer to them, even if it is superficially. I use this app a few times a week.
Meebo
This app lets you log in to multiple chat services at once. I'm logged in to Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo and even my ancient AIM account. For me this is a great way to be available and it's quicker and easier than sorting through email. This is another way I can keep in touch with friends and coworkers and even be a little more productive.
Twitteriffic
I may be a Facebook lurker, but I just can't seem to get engaged with Twitter. If no one want's to know where I am, the surely don't want to know I'm making a ham sandwich or watching Fringe. One good use that I have found is that I'll look at Twitter for instant news. I follow some of the news sources around the bay and people just post news that they see. I use this app about 3 times a year.
LinkedIn
For those of you who don't know LinkedIn, it's a social networking group for professionals. I use this to keep up-to-date with people from my professional life. I've had several people contact me because this was the only way they could find me. As far as the app goes, it only moderately useful. I can see and post updates, however I never post and only about 3 of my friends post. I consider this my lifeline back to corporate America if this education 'thing' doesn't work out.
Y! Messinger
The update for this has just been released. Why have another chat app when I've got meebo, you ask? One reason only: this app supports live video chat to a desktop client (and other phones of course). As far as I know, it's the only one so far. I'll cover phones another time, but for now just let me say Yahoo is still in the game.
That's it for now, as always send me your app gems. My in-laws love to give me iTunes gift cards and it's burning a hole in my pocket!
